Common questions

What is there to do in Citrusdal?

Soak in the 43 °C natural hot springs at The Baths, tour citrus and rooibos farms (Carmién, De Tol, Hexrivier), taste wine and gin at Piekenierskloof, hike at Cederkloof and Wolfkop Nature Reserve, drive 4x4 trails at Marcuskraal, and explore the Cederberg — Stadsaal Caves, bouldering and San rock art.

What can you do in Citrusdal with kids?

The Baths has warm shallow pools; farm tours end in fruit; Wolfkop Nature Reserve hiking is free; and Piekenierskloof Mountain Resort has a playground, putt-putt, archery and air golf. The resort’s zip line, which older children would otherwise be the audience for, has been closed since the Citrusdal floods and its own website still lists it as unavailable until further notice.

Is the Cederberg close to Citrusdal?

Citrusdal sits at the foot of the Cederberg. Cederkloof and Wolfkop trails are minutes from town; deeper Cederberg spots like Stadsaal Caves and Kromrivier are roughly an hour to ninety minutes away.

Can you visit a rooibos farm in Citrusdal?

Yes. Carmién Tea runs a rooibos farm south of town off the N7 with a tea shop and farm tours, and De Tol on the same farm runs a tour alongside its deli and restaurant. Rooibos grows commercially nowhere in the world but this corner of the Western Cape, which is what makes a farm visit here different from a tasting anywhere else.

Can you do a citrus farm tour in Citrusdal?

Hexrivier Sitrus runs an organic lemon tour, and De Tol runs a farm tour on the Carmién property. The valley harvests and packs from about March to September, so a tour in those months shows you a working operation rather than an empty shed. Confirm dates and availability with the farm directly — tours are not run daily and are not always open to walk-ups.

Where can you taste wine near Citrusdal?

Piekenierskloof Wine Cellars is on the pass above the town, and Tierhoek Wines is in the valley. Nieuw Brew and the gin and wine tastings listed on this page cover the rest. This is a small, quiet wine area rather than a Stellenbosch-style route — the appeal is that you are unlikely to share the tasting room.

Can you go 4x4 driving near Citrusdal?

Marcuskraal runs 4x4 routes and also takes campers, so it is the usual base for a weekend of it. The wider Cederberg has gravel and mountain passes as well, but several of those cross private land or a wilderness area and need a permit or the landowner’s permission — check before you set out rather than at a locked gate.

Is there anything to do in Citrusdal when it rains?

The hot springs are the obvious answer, and arguably better in the wet. Beyond that the indoor options are genuinely limited: farm and cellar tastings, the Modderfontein art gallery at The Old Village, and the NG Gemeente church in town. Citrusdal is a winter rainfall area, so a wet day in June or July is not unusual and is worth planning for.
